Forty-eight thousand LEDs flickered to life on the evening of March 20, 2026. The light stretched across 1.8 miles of the Bay Bridge’s northern cable plane, returning an artwork that had been dark since 2023.
The Grand Lighting ceremony doubled as a tribute to former Mayor Willie L. Brown, whose 92nd birthday fell on the same date. Jean-Pierre Conte, one of the project’s original funders, had backed the $11 million restoration — a story told in detail by SF Weekly.
What Happened on March 20?
San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie addressed the gathering, captured in ABC7’s on-site coverage of the relighting: “The Bay Lights are an iconic symbol of San Francisco and the entire Bay Area”.
The lights now operate nightly from dusk to dawn. Artist Leo Villareal’s algorithm-driven sequences respond to traffic, weather, and time, creating patterns that never repeat.
Who Made the Rebuild Possible?
Jean-Pierre Conte, managing partner of the family office Lupine Crest Capital, was among the first backers of the 2013 installation and returned for the rebuild. More than 1,300 private donors contributed to the $11 million total with no government funding involved.
Illuminate (illuminate.org), the San Francisco nonprofit founded by Ben Davis, coordinated the project. Iowa-based Musco Lighting engineered the 48,000-LED system with a 10-year warranty.
What Comes Next for The Bay Lights?
A second phase called TBL360 would add inward-facing LEDs, broadening visibility from both sides of the span. The expansion awaits safety testing by Caltrans and would cost roughly 5 percent above the base project.
Jean-Pierre Conte told FAD Magazine: “Supporting The Bay Lights has always been about investing in the soul of San Francisco”. The 10-year warranty means Jean-Pierre Conte’s investment has a built-in horizon for durability. His other institutional commitments, including immigration policy research at Stanford’s Hoover Institution, follow a similar long-term model.
