Food truck rally not to be missed

ZANESVILLE — A food trailer with a restaurant’s menu will be one of more than a dozen food trucks at the Zanesville’ Jaycee’s Food Truck Rally on Saturday.

The event takes place from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Zane’s Landing Park.

Brian Waller, his mother, Kim Gibson, and their long-time restaurant associate, Shawn Kirkpatrick, started the Horns Fins and Feathers food trailer last year, after the family sold Muddy Miser’s and the Victor Steakhouse in Victor, Montana.

Too young to retire he said, “We got together and said we’ll just do a restaurant on wheels.”

They put together what Waller calls a well-rounded menu, with fresh fish from Lake Erie and hand-cut steaks, gourmet burgers and chicken sandwiches.

“It caters to all types of eaters,” he said. Their best seller is a lobster roll, and his poppers are popular too. Poppers, Waller’s creation, are cream cheese, ricotta and mozzarella cheese, fresh spinach, green onion, and spices rolled in an egg roll with a protein and deep fried.

Only 7 months old, the trailer has already developed a following, he said. “We have quite a good following from people who know our cooking, but we are seeing so many new faces.

“People like chasing us around, I get messages all the time ‘Where are you going to be today?”

The change from a brick-and mortar-restaurant has been the “best journey I have had in life,” Kirkpatrick said. “It has brought a whole new joy to cooking.”

Gibson said the trailer makes “cooking fun again.”

The rally will have something for everyone, said Zanesville Jaycees’ spokesman Josh Tisonyai, including beer sales featuring local and national brands.

It is an important fundraiser for the organization, helping to pay for the annual Stars and Stripes on the River fireworks. “All the funds from the food truck rally goes into the community,” he said. “It goes into some of our bigger projects, like Stars and Stripes, which is celebrating it’s 50th year this summer.”

Tisonyai said while there may be a lot going on in town that weekend, 18 food trucks for a good cause is not something that should be missed.
